Problem of the Day: 1/14/13

In the diagram below, what is the ratio of the area of the equilateral triangle to the area of the square? Express your answer with simplified radicals.

Solution to yesterday’s problem:

Jemma has these socks in her drawer:

  • 8 pink
  • 8 navy with yellow stripes
  • 8 black with polka-dots
  • 8 purple/green argyle

So logically, to find the minimum number of socks to pick out randomly to have two socks of different colors, we should look at the worst case scenario: if the first 8 socks are all the same color. Then the next sock must be a different color. So Jemma must pick 9 socks to ensure that she has two different socks.
