Problem of the Day: 12/18/12

If P is a positive prime number less than 50, what is the probability that P + 1 is divisible by 3?

Solution to yesterday’s problem:
Saying “none will land on tails” is the exact same as saying “all will land on heads.” So to find the probability of all three coins landing on heads, we multiply the probabilities that each coin individually lands on heads.

The probability of one coin landing on heads is 1/2. So the probability for three coins is 1/2 times 1/2 times 1/2, or 1/8.
